What is AkhbarSearch.com?

We are the first Egyptian social news site on the web.

Members can share stories that they find on the web to be relevant to Egypt and Egyptians. Other members can then vote on a story that they think should receive more publicity or more attention.

AkhbarSearch.com is a mechanism to catapult the voice of the people to the "frontpage" (what we call the published news section) and leave the irrelavent hype deep in the shadows where they belong (these would be the least popular stories in the unpublished section).

This sounds awesome! How do I participate?

Participation is easy and its absolutely free! You will need to register here. After you have registered, you can login and start adding stories that you find by using the "submit a story" button. You can search for stories that other people have submitted and either vote for a story (to give it more publicity) or even add your own commentary to a story.

This site is only in English, what about Arabic news?

Fear not! The Arabic version is coming soon! In the meantime though, please share stories in English. If there is a story in Arabic you really want to link to, you can write a title and a short summary (a few sentences) in English, but please do not add any Arabic titles or summaries, we will have the Arabic section up and running soon.

Some Terminology

Approve
When you "approve" a story, you do not necessarily have to like what it says. You are essentially vouching for the story to show up on the frontpage. You are voting for the story's relavence and newsworthiness for everyone to see. Think of yourself as the editor in chief of a newspaper. You are trying to approve the stories that should make it to the front page of that newspaper for everyone to read.

Unpublished News
When you or any other member submits a story, it sits in the "unpublished news" section. The story automatically receives your approval when you submit it. In order for the story to reach the "published news" page other members have to approve of it. Once it passes a certain approval threshold, the story will show up on the "published news" page.

Published News
These are the stories that have received enough approvals by members to be moved from the unpublished news section to the published news section.

What the Categories Mean

Before trying to put everything into a "bin", we do realize that many stories can be placed under several categories. We ask that you do your best to place stories in the category that fits the best.

You can also add "tags" (keywords) when adding a story. Tags are attached to the story and can help another user find the story fatser. For example, if you have a story about new building developments in Alexandria, you can add that story to the business & economy category and then add the tags "building developments", "new developments Alexandria" and a few other tags to help better identify the story.

Arts & Entertainment
Stories related to actors, films, movie production, radio & television,...etc. should go here.

Business & Economy
Stories related to the economy, stock market, companies, foreign investments,..etc. should go here.

Miscellaneous & Off-Beat
Stories that don't quite fit into any of the other categories.

Politics & Government
Stories related to the political scene, government policies, law,...etc. should go here.

Regional & Global
Stories with a regional (middle-east/arab) or international flavor directly or indirectly affecting/involving Egypt and Egyptians. These stories usually have a hint of politics/government or business/economy to them, but not necessarily. Issues such as Palestine, Iraq, Egyptians living abroad,...etc.

Society & Culture
Stories related to Egyptians' way of life (religion, education, social behavior,..etc.) should go here.

Sports
Stories related to sports should go here. We currently do not subcategorize the sports category, so all sports from squash to soccer should go in here.
